We zijn gegaan van You will learn respect, and suffering will be your teacher naar compassion is a weakness. Bro. Dat was het punt niet: Zuko spoke out of turn, which humiliated Ozai's ego, and in return ozai wanted to punish and humiliate his son back. And the POOOINT is that our sweet baby zuko refused to fight his father. He kneeled down and was crying; he didn't actually engage in the fight. and even if he had, WHY WOULD YOU THINK that he'd EVER be in a position to look like he's winning??? The show makes it very clear that zuko isn't a firebending prodigy like his sister and that ozai really looks down on him for it. Even to "test" zuko, ozai would never allow it to seem like his 13 yo son bested him at a duel. Are you insane? What the fuck. The scene exists to show Ozai's cruelty, and the burning and banishment isn't something "for zuko's own good in the end" or something ozai is conflicted about. bro saw an opportunity to get rid of his failure of a son and took it. ALSO we're not supposed to see ozai's face yet! that's a big thiiiiiiing stop it i'm mad.

    3) Azula is te vroeg geïntroduceerd

    4) meer dingen die ik atm niet direct kan herinneren want i'm not about to do a rewatch. no. hate hate loathe.

Dan, admittedly: in seizoen 2 zien we tot nu toe best coole stukjes van watersturen etc. Credit where credit is due; it looks cool. Het probleem met de zeeslang van de serpent's pass is op een vreemde manier geïntegreerd en het is jammer, maar okay.

BUT THEY FUCKED WITH THE PERFECTION OF 'ZUKO ALONE'?! wat? wie wat waarom why in the everloving fuck would you do that??? I mean, it's in there--i'd be organising a riot if it wasn't--but they're doing everything wrong?

Where is my environmental storytelling about the area zuko travelled through?

Why does he steal thes supplies from the pregnant couple, when it's a vital story beat that he is tempted but doesn't? We're supposed to learn that zuko, at his core, is a compassionate person. that's like, what the episode is about. so tell me why WHY he suddenly does take it now????

i am fuuuuuming, and i will keep you posted with my thoughts because everyone really wants and needs that rn

more like a monologue it seems

it gets a little better, but i'm not a fan. letterlijk een slap aftreksel van het gesprek dat ze in de animatie hebben--tea pun intended.

Hot Damn. We already knew this remake sucked balls, but now they've gone too far. Remember that scene where Zuko finds Appa in Ba Sing Se and is followed by Iroh? I'll help you.

Iroh: I was just about to ask you the same thing. What do you plan to do now that you've found the Avatar's bison? Keep him locked in our new apartment? Should I go put on a pot of tea for him?
Zuko: First I have to get it out of here.
Iroh [Starts yelling.] And then what!? You never think these things through! [Points at him.] This is exactly what happened when you captured the Avatar at the North Pole! You had him, and then you had nowhere to go!
Zuko: I would have figured something out!
Iroh: No! If his friends hadn't found you, you would have frozen to death!
Zuko: I know my own destiny, Uncle!
Iroh: Is it your own destiny, or is it a destiny someone else has tried to force on you?
Zuko: Stop it, Uncle! I have to do this!
Iroh I'm begging you, Prince Zuko! It's time for you to look inward and begin asking yourself the big questions. Who are you, and what do you want?

Look at the emotions and exclamation marks. Iroh is mad in this scene and he's right to. Zuko is stubborn and stupid at times and has made some dumb decisions that came back to haunt him. Iroh loves him, but in order to get through to him, this scene with this intensity was so so necessary. Freeing Appa was the start of a big change in Zuko and especially the "is it your destiny? or is it a destiny someone else has tried to force on you?" is so unbelievably important because it kickstarts zuko's next character arc towards the guy who eventually turns against his father during the day of black sun. Later here in Ba Sing Se, i honestly think it's due to these words that zuko starts to consider letting katara help him. and picking their side. this scene was vital to zuko's character. And they butchered it in the live action.

Iroh stops zuko from leaving the appartment for his job and sits them down to finally talk about the shitty things zuko said to him back in the first episode when they break up. Iroh starts saying how zuko was right with what he said, that he stopped the siege of ba sing se, watched ozai take the throne and be a shit parent. and that during the banishment, he wanted to be there for zuko like a father--but he also tried to make zuko into the man his son might have come to be.
And i'm just over here like... zuko was *not* right for saying what he said, and definitely not in the way he said them. And all the guidance iroh has tried to give him, wasn't trying to turn zuko into lu ten? Zuko at his core, already was and is a good person. Something that became evident in the episode Zuko Alone (which netflix fucked up) where even when he's starving, he leaves the supplies of a pregnant couple behind because they might need it more. The real iroh was genuinly helping and supporting and guiding his nephew. This one should have been doing that too? and him apologizing for trying to temper some of zuko's stupid and reckless behavior is like... why? why? you were very very right to do so? and zuko should see that.
Confront him with the choices he's made and where it led him. Tell him that he fucked up and that he's done it before and doesn't learn. Iroh is angry, yelling, begging him to look inward and find himself, not the "destiny" ozai forced on him, because he knows who zuko fundamentally is, which is a good person.

Netflix!Iroh: "I must ask you too, zuko, to choose what kind of man you want to be. But choose for yourself. And whatever you choose, whatever path you walk down, I will always love you."

NO. STOP. Confront this teenage boy with his teenage bullshit, be an actual parental influence on his life and give him guidance! you're being a wet blanket of a character with the backbone of cooked spagetti. I recognise that Netflix wanted to paint you as a lot more aware and remorseful of the pain you inflicted during the seige of ba sing se, but through your shame about it, you have lost all the fire you had--the fire you NEED to be able to help your nephew. THERE'S A REASON YOU'RE YELLING AT HIM IN THE CARTOON!!! WHY ARE WE NOW ALMOST CONDONING WHATEVER BAD CHOICE ZUKO WANTS TO MAKE NEXT? NO. STOP!
cool that you're saying you'll always love him and shit, but that completely underminds their reunion in book 3?! Zuko is going to betray iroh in the finale, and the guilt about it is going to eat him alive. And it needs to. This support is nice and all, but it'll take so much away from one of the most meaningful moments in book 3. "I was never angry with you, zuko. I was sad, because i was afraid you had lost your way."

Free literary analysis from the Frouk, shut up everyone my show is on :Y)

    Dramatic

"it sounds like you might need back up in there"

jet, why the fuck are you getting involved? you don't care, right? originally you were brainwashed into that, now you're just bitter or some shit, but katara had to BRIBE you to help them find this place, and suddenly you want to stay and help? you don't like them and they don't like you at this point, and the alliance through necessity has ended. who wrote this shit smh

also sokka and aang taking 0.3 seconds to consider this offer and then being like "allrighty! this dude has never betrayed us before and shown himself to be shit, so this surely will go well!" and katara, who SAW him instigating a violent riot just because those people were firenation refugees, which is like, pretty red flag behavior, is like "okay cool!"

    NO?!

Off-episode by the way: I also saw a TikTok expressing very well how this version of the characters feels off, especially azula.

When getting face to face with Aang, Netflix!Azula says "This is the avatar? Zuzu, he's a little boy."

Which is like, condescending alright, but it doesn't sound like azula is supposed to sound. It's too soft. Azula's lines are sharp, ending in hard consonants that sound like attacks. Try this version instead:

"This is the avatar? You were beaten by a child?"

don't tell me you can't hear that sentence in azula's voice already.

On-episode: goddamn not the library. i really don't like that episode. with all the changes they made, with them finding out about the comet through Sai, couldn't they have gotten the exact date and found out about the eclips in some other way? i'm getting whiplash from all the different bits of season 2 thrown together like a very mismatched outfit. and i just dont like the library, but that's me.
