It was the year 2156 when scientists finally discovered a new way of creating life. By manipulating artificial genes and growing the fetus in a tube, they were able to created 'the perfect Human being'. They were rumoured to have no flaws and to look as beautiful as any child celebrity. Their hair- and eye-colour could, according to the advertisement, range from red to blue and everything in between. Naturally, rich people all around the world put in an order for one of these 'perfect children'. Eventually, 23 orders were accepted. And in May 2157, the first batch of these 'Beauties' was born. The first one on the 2nd of May, the second on the 3rd, etc. And for a while, everything was great. They had loving parents. A home. They were loved. They were happy.
And then everything took a dark turn.

On the 25th of May, in the year 2162, one little Beauty developed a 'Gift'. This boy, the first successfully born prototype, is publicly known as Zero. It was his sixth birthday party when the tragedy happened. The other 23 Beauties had been invited for this celebration, because it was not only Zero's birthday, but also the anniversary of the scientific break-through that made the Beauties possible. It was a very nice and relaxed meeting. The parents chatted, the children played... Until Little Zero passed out.
When he awoke, Zero was not the same. His voice was ancient and loud. He spoke his first prophecy.
“These Gifts of Beauty,
They are the work of an empty man.
To retrieve your soul,
Follow my words as close as you can.”
When the little boy made eye contact with one of the other Beauties, he would loose control of his own body and speak a prophecy. Each prophecy leads, according to Little Zero, to their 'soul'. Back then, nobody understood what the little boy meant. They didn't understand why Little Adam, Beauty #21, needed to find "A dame with hair as white as frost, to whom beauty is never lost. Her head is always full of dreams, yet frozen in time is how she seems."
Then the Beauties grew up. And as each of them hit the age of six, they all developed a Gift. Several kids were suddenly making fire dance on their fingertips, while others could bend the will of their parents or heal small wounds and injuries. The world panicked. The Gifts were strange, weird, and sometimes even dangerous.
It wasn't until the end of June, one month after the last Beauty had received their gift, that things escalated. Beauty #18 had been brutally attacked on the street by a frightened woman. The six year old boy had been strangled to death, despite his efforts to fight her off.
People everywhere were demanding the death of these children. It was obvious that they were getting too powerful. Apart from their Gifts, they were also stronger and faster than the average Human. They really did seem perfect.
Until exactly five months after their birthdays. Because on that day, they became colour blind and they stopped being able to taste and smell things completely. The children had lost a part of themselves. The only explanation the parents had, was Zero's line. “They need to find their soul,” he'd said seriously on his birthday. The scientists said it was complete fantasy and just said it was a fault in their genes. Yet, the world was convinced that, without finding this one 'person' the Gifted would be unable to reach their 'soul' and their full power. And they were happy with that.

Eventually, it was decided that the children would be imprisoned, away from humanity. A small island in the Indian Ocean was used to build two prison camps. Each camp would hold twelve of the 'Gifted' as they were now labeled. Light-weight metal gauntlets were made for their hands. This special type of metal would prevent the children from using their Gifts.
Ever since these 24 Gifted children were seven years old, they've been locked up in the prison camps. It is now the year 2175. Most Gifted are now 18 years old. This roleplay follows their story and their struggle.

This roleplay follows: the twelve oldest Gifted, their four guards and two scientists. The Gifted each have their own cell. The guards and scientists all have their own flat on the premises. The staff is concluded by two ladies who clean and cook the meals.

Language: Vanellope is fluent in English, Japanese and Belarussian. Her native language is Japanese.
Religion: Vanellope is a atheist, but she was raised as a Buddhist, and still has most of the traits from the religion left over from force of habit.
Mother: Her mother, Sadoko is dead, having died in childbirth with Vanellope's little brother.
Father: Her father, Richard, is also dead. He died when Vanellope was 12 and her little brother was three.
Siblings: Vanellope has one little brother, called Kyo. He sees her more as a mother then a big sister though, as she mostly raised him. He's currently in a boarding school in England.
Height: 5foot 8inches
Weight: 8stone
Looks:Vanellope was shoulder-length hair that she dyes into being purple with pink highlights. She prefers the brighter colours to the natural black, as she says black depresses her too much and reminds her of her mothers funeral. She has dark eyes, but again, usually wears bright contacts to make them lighter or prettier. Her favourite is blue, even though her little brother tells her that she looks creepy with blue eyes. She is slim, but curvy, from years of martial arts practise and ballet and traditional dance lessons. She looks a lot more delicate then she actually is, and is a lot stronger then she looks to be.

Characteristics:
Vanellope has also been very independent, even before she had to grow up very quickly to care for her little brother. She is also very adaptable, and was quickly able to call the prison her home, although she doesn't really like being there as she couldn't bring her brother. Vanellope is also very responsible and reliable and can be trusted with most things. She is also very passionate about things she cares about, such as her dancing.
She does however have a dark side to her personality. Vanellope can be very unemotional, especially when discussing her parents or her work. She is also very inhibited as a rule, but when she's dancing she's not. Vanellope is very distrusting of people after her father promised to look after her then abandoned her [in her view]. She is very stubborn, and won't back down from her view. Vanellope can be very manipulative at times, even without needing a Gift.
History:
Vanellope lived with her mother and father in Osaka, Japan. She wasn't spoiled, but she was treated very well. When she was around 4, her parents moved from Osaka to Kyoto, into what used to be a tea-house. Vanellope loved that building with all her heart, and used to love running around as a child, or practising her dancing and shamen in there, pretending she was a geisha in training. When she was nine years old, her mother gave birth to her brother, but unfortunately died during labour. Then, she started calling herself and her little brother orphans, because their father went into such a crippling state of depression, he might as well have not been in the house. She learnt to cook, and raised her brother as best as she could while also looking after her father, and attending school herself. She also managed to get a part-time job teaching capoeira.

Height: 6ft 1
Weight: 72kg
Looks: Kevin has short, black hair. It’s easy to keep clean and to make it look acceptable. He is able to cut his own hair and make it look decent, which is quite necessary on the island. He has cut the hair of colleagues before. He has light brown eyes and a quite stern/serious expression on his face. His lips are a normal size and shape and nothing special. He has stubbles on his chin, because he shaves every three days. He’s very punctual about when he shaves.
Kevin has quite a muscular body, for he works-out quite regularly to stay in shape and has a semi-healthy diet. He also has a tattoo on his neck, or a rose and a snake, intertwined. It’s quite a simple tattoo.
Likes: Kevin likes to read mystery and crime novels, with the occasional fantasy book thrown in. He likes also enjoys silence. He sometimes likes to draw, usually landscapes. No one knows of his talent at drawing.
Dislikes: Music, loud noises, socializing, coffee.
Characteristics:
Kevin, on first sight, seems like an unemotional and cold person. He doesn’t talk a lot and has quite a short temper. The smallest things, for no apparent reason, will anger or annoy him. On first sight, it seems like that’s all there is to him; a grumpy man with a short temper. Yet, if you get to know him more, which no one has done, you will find out that there is so much more. For one, he is very independent. He knows how to take care of himself and, technically, doesn’t need anyone else in his life. This, however doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want anyone else there. Because Kevin is also very sensitive. He cares about people’s opinions of him and the way people react to him. That’s why, despite his independence, it hurts so much that he was always been alone.
Now, to the prisoners under his supervision, he is as stern as his Aunt was. He doesn’t allow special privileges; everyone lives under the same rules. When the prisoners defy them, or try to, he will not be lenient in his punishments. He will quite happily whip the skin off their backs or lock them up in complete darkness and solitude for a few hours. Yet, despite his cruel words, this is a version of ‘tough love’ for him. After years of the same job, Kevin has learned to care for the prisoners. He will punish them, for their own good, to teach them manners and teach them to behave.
Kevin is also quite impatient and distrusting. He has never put his trust into anyone, for he knows that people will always disappoint. A lot of the time, he barely even trusts himself.
Kevin, deep down, is loyal. He is loyal to his job, to himself and the prisoners. For, in his mind, they are locked up for their own good. He disagrees with those saying that the prisoners should be allowed freedom.
Kevin has always been quite clever, though he’s not a genius. He is observant and quiet and almost always acts on impulse. He has trouble with actually thinking before acting/speaking.
History and family life:
Kevin Dain was born in a small town in the state of Arizona. His mother, Elizabeth Gabriel died in labour. She was only 19 when she gave birth to Kevin and had always been quite weak in health. Kevin’s father, Robert Dain, was heartbroken after Elizabeth died. He couldn’t find the will to live. He didn’t name his son, barely looking twice at him. This is how Kevin’s care fell into the hands of Rebecca Dain, Robert’s sister and Kevin’s aunt.
Rebecca Dain was unmarried and quite stern. The first three years of Kevin’s life, she raised him sternly but fair. This changed when Robert hung himself in the tree in Rebecca’s back yard.
Kevin had no idea what was happening at this point, for he had never met his father. Rebecca (or Aunt Beccy, as Kevin called her) thought it was for the best, since Robert still blamed Kevin for Elizabeth’s death. By the time Kevin turned five, he had practically forgotten the hanging man in the back yard.
After her brother’s death, Rebecca became so much sterner. She had no other family, wasn’t very social and had to raise the little boy all by herself. She made Kevin do housework since he was three; making him help with dusting and giving him more chores as he grew older. By the time Kevin was 10, he was doing all the housework on his own. Rebecca spend most her time in her room by this time, depressed and trying/failing to conjure her brother’s spirit from the realm of Death.
At school, Kevin was a quiet child. As long as he left everyone alone, everyone else left him alone. He didn’t have friends, did his homework after cooking and cleaning at home, and went to bed early. So by all rights, he was a very good child. Yet, he lived most his life with so many questions. He didn’t remember anything about his mother or father at this point, and asking aunt Becca was out of the question. She refused to answer any questions. He didn’t know his family, where he came from or what happened to his parents. Were they dead? Had they given him up? And if so, why?
These questions left a lot of quiet anger in the boy. It felt as if nobody gave a damn about him. No one cared, and that was the way of the world. He was all on his own.
When Kevin turned 16, he was a withdrawn and angry boy. He didn’t speak to anyone, he pushed away people who tried to get close to him, etc. aunt Becca still spend almost all her time in her room, performing ancient rituals. It was not long after Kevin’s 16th birthday that aunt Becca hit him in the face with a baseball bat. She tied the boy to the kitchen table and planned to use him as a sacrifice. Kevin only escaped by half-untying himself and stabbing his crazy aunt. The police found enough evidence to support Kevin’s statement. They didn’t know what to do with him from this point, for he didn’t have any money. He ended up being sent to an orphanage. Kevin only stayed for a day or two before packing his bag and leaving Arizona. Since he was Becca’s only living relative, he inherited all her money, which was about $6700. This was enough to set himself up with a rented flat and to get himself into a security guard’s school. This is where he got his knowledge of Martial arts. Afterwards, he briefly worked in several prisons and then got recruited as head guard for the Gifted Prison.
He still is not very social. He keeps to himself most of the time.
Extra:
Kevin has quite a soft voice, yet he’s able to make it very clear how angry he gets.
Kevin has some OCD tendencies. Before turning off the lights at night, he has to flip the switch four times, causing the lights to flash. He has done this since he started the job. He also refuses to eat food that’s touching each other or isn’t lined up neatly.
