Wanneer de Poolse Elena Cesarz van de dood gered wordt door de jonge, Britse soldaat Styles realiseerd ze zich pas echt dat de tweede wereldoorlog aan de gang is. De twee raken aan de praat, kletsen wat af en zien in dat ze heel wat gemeen lijken te hebben. Pas als Harry opgeroepen wordt voor een nieuwe missie merkt Elena dat ze echt gedoemd is om voor altijd alleen te blijven, maar de twee beloven elkaar brieven te schrijven, om zo toch nog dicht bij elkaar te zijn en hun relatie tot stand te houden.
Wat ze beiden maar al te goed weten is dat beiden hun levens niet veilig zijn. Met één verkeerde stap kan alles voorgoed veranderen. Zijn de geliefde sterk genoeg om de afstand en tijd te overleven?
