Breaking news: perfectionism may have been holding me back from progress.

Zie hieronder.

“[…] I’ve been having a really serious creative conversation with myself. And I think the conclusion I’ve come to is that I need to swap PERFECTION for PURPOSE.

What I mean by that is this:

No creative work will ever be perfect. And holding each creative pursuit to that standard might drive craft, to a point, but it also poisons the process.

But purpose. Purpose is a matter of intention. It’s about whether or not you as the creator succeeded at doing what you set out to do, whether that’s from a plot or structural or narrative or thematic perspective.

(And don't even get me started on the mental tangle formed by the fervent hope that your most recent work is one of the best things you've ever written, and the simultaneous need to believe that you can still do better.)

Bones is not a perfect book. But when it comes to purpose, I can look at it and say, with my entire chest and every breath and heartbeat in it, that I achieved exactly what I set out to do. And that feels like a far better metric.

My perfectionism is a constant companion.

I will never be rid of that critic in my passenger seat.

But my hope is that, by centering purpose, I’ll keep it from grabbing the wheel.”
