Professor Terry Castle wrote an essay (The Chronicle Review, 6 May 2012) in which she elaborately explains how helicopter parenting (i.e. excessive parental involvement) jeopardizes students’ intellectual freedom and development. The following arguments prove that Castle is correct; students should engage in symbolic ‘self-orphaning’ (i.e. be autonomous and critical) to be able to develop intellectually.
