Name Joshua Niall Teagan
Joshua English, From the Hebrew name Yehoshu'a meaning "Yahweh is salvation". Joshua was one of the twelve spies sent into Canaan by Moses, as told in the Old Testament. After Moses died Joshua succeeded him as leader of the Israelites. As an English name, Joshua has been in use since the Protestant Reformation.
Niall Gaelic, Meaning "champion" or "cloud". This was the name of a semi-legendary 4th-century Irish king, Niall of the Nine Hostages.
Teagan Gaelic, Anglicized form of Gaelic 'Ó Tadhgáin' meaning "descendant of Tadhgan".
Everyone usually calls him Josh. At the stables he's usually called Hugo, after Victor Hugo the author of Les Miserables, because all his horses are named after characters from this book. His weirdest nickname is the one he's gotten on the jumpingtrack: Lingus. This is a play on Aer Lingus, the Irish airline, due to the fact that the boy always seems to fly actross the track on his horses.
Age 20, 13 April
Study English Literature. Josh has an undying love for books, and reading in general. Since English is one of his two mothertongues, it'll take up less time than World Literature, which means he can keep working on his career as a Show Jumper. He does however want to go further into World Literature during his Master, but at this point he's far too busy with the training of his young horse, riding his two competition horses, and studying just the English Literature, that he's very happy that Springfield had a 4 year undergraduate course, insead of the usual 3 years.
Ironically enough his favourite book is from a French author: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.
Sports Show Jumping. Josh started working with horses at a very young age. His parents couldn't afford any extras in his childhood, so Josh decided to help out on the local studfarm, in exchange for lessons. It quickly became clear that he had a lot of potential, and is already high up the FEI rankings at his tender age of 20. He has his own ways of riding and it works great, eventhough many people have tried to change this over the years. It never did.
Nationality Irish. He was born and raised in Cork, in a small baby blue house on the poor side of town.
Character/Personality Josh is a
calm and
very sensitive boy. His gut is his everything. If he feels comfortable or good around you, he's okay with you and likes you, but if he has a bad feeling about you, whether it is grounded or not, he'll despise you. Due to his sensitivity he is more drawn to calm and readable people, than to hyperactive and flirty people, because he can't get through to the core of their being easily. This is also why he loves to work with animals so much, because they never pretend to be different than their true and only self. It will be possible to see if he likes you or not at first glance, if you know where and how to look. Josh himself is ironically really
closed and has a hard time opening up to people. He says this is because he's Irish, but sharing a room with your siblings makes you a bit more secretive than a normal kid, and being raised in a conservative family doesn't make it any better. Bottling things up has always been the answer for this kid. He has a
difficulty dealing with his emotions and only lets them out when he has reached his boiling point, cowering in a corner of one of the stables of his horses, usually Gavroche. This is mostly the case for negative emotions, but also extremely positive emotions, like having a crush, get bottles up far beneath the surface. As mentioned before, Josh was raised very
conservatively, and this has rubbed off on him. He might be
respectful towards all, he has some standards which seem to date to a different century. He believes in no sex before marriage, goes to church every sunday, prays every day and before every meal, is againt abortion and devorce, though this last one is acceptable for him in some cases. He's mainly a
very God fearing boy, afraid of doing something wrong and ending up in Purgatory, or worse Hell. This also plays a factor in Josh's
undying loyalty, perseverance, and discipline. He's loyal to everyone and everything which he has ever been drawn to, which usually ends up biting him in the ass, because he does everything not to hurt them including if it hurts himself. His perseverance and discipline are mostly visible in his sports and studies. He's up every morning at 6 and in bed at 22. He puts at least 6 hours into his sport each day and 6 hours into his studies, leaving 2 to 4 hours for everything else a day. This limits his social life a lot and makes it hard for him to really bond with people. He likes to be around people he feels good about, people he can call his friends and is undyingly loyal to, though he's around animals more often than humans. These are also the creatures he truely trusts with his life. Josh is finally also a
very smart kid, but keeps it to himself, afraid to get cocky, though he does make
smart-ass remarks whenever the situation calls for it. He usually isn't much of a talker, but once you get him started, he
doesn't stop talking untill someone bluntly shuts him up. He's usually
the go-to kid for subtlety, but once he's on a roll, he needs a more forcefull way to get stopped.
In short, Josh is a smart God fearing hard-working kid with conservative views, who goes with his gut feeling and has a hard time opening up and having a social life.
Appearance [fc: Finn Harries] The first thing people notice about Josh is his fysique. He is extremely skinny, his bones are visible, and all his clothes seem too big for his body. This is partly due to his past, because the kid didn't have the greatest start in life, and the way he lives now, not daring to stuff his face with everything he gets, in fear of throwing it up again, or leaving nothing for others. Once you see past this, your eye goes to his fluffy short brown hair and his dark grey eyes. His hair is naturally wild and his eyes glisten smart and mischievous at all times. He usually wears contact lenses, but on his lazy days he wears glasses. He has thin lips and his teeth are pearly white, which usually are seen when he smiles his bright smile. Because of his poor start in life, he also isn't as tall as he could have been. He's now just over 1.65m tall, instead of the average 1.77m normal Irish men are. This has also played a part in his dress sense. Because he was never used to having more clothes than one jacket, one pair of shoes, a school uniform, and one set of casual clothes, he now has a hard time dressing himself. He usually walks around in his riding trousers, jodhpurs or riding boots, and a t-shirt, with or without a sweatervest. His t-shirts are always far too loose, though his tight trousers show exactly how skinny he actually is. He now does have more clothes than two sets, but he still isn't someone who will wear different clothes every day, or whenever he went from the university to the stables and back again. He does have some normal trousers and shoes, skinny jeans which fit him as regular jeans, and normal boots, but he doesn't wear them a lot, usually only to church. The thing all his outfits have in common is a black and silver rosary he wears under his clothes. His Irish accent is also a striking feature of this kid, once you get him talking.

Joshua comes from a big tight-knit family living in a
small house.

Josh was born as the middle child of two poor but hardworking Catholic citizens of Cork, in Southern Ireland. Oscar, his father, is a factoryworker and Aileen, his mother, is an elementary school teacher. They were, and still are, totally in love, just like his grandparents, who live with them in the small 3 bedroom house. This meant that from the start he, his sister, and later also his brother, had to share a room. They never had any extras, like a second pair of shoes, a second coat, or fancy clothes, their main and sometimes only meal was their school lunch, but they were a family and they had eachother, and they wouldn't want it any other way. Cork, being a small town, is surrounded by farms, big and small, both with cattle and with horses. From an early age he was clearly interested in horses, but his parents couldn't afford anything close to riding lessons. When he was 5, there was a ponyshow in the city center. His sister took him and his brother, who's also obsessed with horses, to take a look around. After petting a lot of ponies, Josh wanted to get on one, but Niamh didn't want to take any risks. The little boy kept begging, until the owner of the tall black horse got wind of it. He said that in about a yer the boy could come to the stables once a week and get a riding lesson, if he helped to groom and feed the horses. The little boy was too happy to even start a debate with him about this. He was going, whatever it took. Quickly the people there saw the small child bloom into a rider with a lot of feel for horses, an aura of calmness around him, and a skill for riding. They proposed to him and his parents to enter him into a competition. He won it at the age of 6 and kept competing, saving the small pricemoney for his masterplan: work hard, get a horse and be the best. At the age of 10, he was able to buy a tall Mérens horse, which the owners had deemed too tall and to stubborn to be a dressage or draft horse. Josh kept working at the studfarm, where little Gavroche had his own spot in a pasture, and training with the small horse, which was, surprisingly enough quite the jumper, and having a lesson once a week he paid for with labour, getting better and better. In the mean time his brother started helping hem with his horse, especially on competition days. This is how the brothers bonded. Once he was 12, he started working at the stables also after school, getting a bit of money on the side, to be able to buy good tack for the small horse, enter national competitions, and safe for a second horse, for when the Mérens got injured, or when he would get too tall for the horse. At his 16th, he was able to. He felt amazing riding the tall horse for the first time, but it was just over a year before he dared to enter a competition with him. Enjolras made it possible for the kid to enter the Gran Prix just before his 18th birthday. To celebrate this, and him becoming an adult, both he, his family, and the people from the studfarm, put money together to buy a really young horse, for him to train himself, and make completely his own. Meanwhile his brother has always been at his side to help him with the horses and the rest of his family are immensely proud of him. Josh finished school at 18, with good grades, and decided to dedicate a full year to riding, before starting university. He finally got a few scholarships due to his rankings, and was able to enroll into Springfield. It was extremely hard for him to leave his family, but he found his place on the other side of the pond. This year he will be less lonely, because his brother also got a scholarship and will be with him from now on, helping him with his horses and riding his own horse, with which he has just started in the Grand Prix this year, while Josh is really up there already.
Josh is usually in America during the academic year, and returns to Ireland every summer and at Christmas if his winnings allow him. While he is living his dream, his sister, an army nurse, the only one not into horses, has gotten married and is due around Christmas this year with her first child. He is very excited to become an uncle.
Extra
At this point Josh owns 3 fierce horses:
Gavroche, a Mérens at the age of 19 and 15 hands high, was Josh's first horse, which he was able to buy the horse when he was10.
Enjolras, a Selle Français at the age of 11 and 16.7 hands high, is Josh's main competition horse, which he has bought the horse when he was 16.
Marius, also a Selle Français at the age of just 7 and 17.1 hands hight, is the youngest of Josh's horses and is still in training to get to the level of the other two, which he got on his 18th birthday, partly as a present from everyone around his, and partly as a present to himself.
All his horses are difficult and very temperamental, but amazing jumpers. Even little Gavroche can jump high enough to be a back-up horse at Josh's level, eventhough he can't jump much higher than this and his ages makes him be more susceptible to influences of the hot and the cold than when he was younger.
The only personal stuff Josh has visible in his room are a few pictures of his horses and his family. He doesn't have much else, except for three little pictures of Mary, St. Michael, and St. Patrick, which hang above the headboard of his bed for protection.
