4. Punishment
I slowly walked back to the fortress. I saw Al Mualim waiting for me, just before the Head Quarter and the library where you can always find him. There were two guards with him; the old man is already on age, he can't really defend hisself anymore. I took my place right in between the two guards, so the master could look me right in the eyes.
'You did well to drive Robert from our home. His force is broken, it should be a long while before he troubles us again.' He walked around while I listened. 'Tell me... Why is it you were successful?' he asked. I didn't answer, because I didn't want to say he's right. The master stopped right before me.
'You listened!'
He stopped talking and looked around. The fortress itself wasn't damaged, only the village was ruined.
'I wish you'd listen in Solomon's Temple. Then all of this could have been avoided.'
'I did as I was asked.' I tried to defend myself, knowing it was pointless. It's the first the master learned my: always stay strong.
'No! You did as you pleased!' Al Mualim said with his keen voice. 'Malik told me of the arrogance you displayed in the temple: your disregard for our ways.' On that moment the two guards grabbed my arms. I tried to pull them back, but they stiffly held me. 'What are you doing?' I shouted. My tries to pull my arms back weakened.
'There are rules; we are nothing if we don't obey the assassins creed. Three simple tenets, which you seem to forget... I will remind you:
First! And for most: stay your blade--'
'From the flesh of an innocent, yes I know.' I finished his sentence. He slapped me right in the face.
'And stay tung! Unless I give you leave to use it.
It hurts. Not my cheek... But the fact that the master, the one who was my father-figure now is so furious at me now.
'If you are so familiar with this tenet, then why did you kill the old man inside the temple? He was innocent! He did not need to die.'
Al Mualim muttered somewhat, but all I could hear was 'or I'll tear it from you with my own hands.'
He scraped his voice.
'The second tenet; the one which gives is strenght: Hide in plain sight. Let the people act, so you become one with the crowd. You remember? Cause as I hear it you chose to expose yourself, throwing attention to you before you would strike!'
His voice finally calmed down a bit, but in his head and soul nothing but fury and anger.
'The third tenet, the worst of all your betrayals. Do not compromise the brotherhood. Its meaning should be obvious: your actions must never bring harm upon the brotherhood, direct, or indirect. Yet, your selfish act beneath Jerusalem placed us all in danger!' He was shouting again. 'And still, you brought the enemy to our home! Every man that's lost today, is lost because of you!'u
There was a moment of silence the master was thinking deep, but all I could think of was how I could have approached Robert differently. No way.
Al Mualim looked at me again and the started talking again: 'I'm sorry, I truly am, but I can not afford a traitor.'
'I am not a traitor!'
No. He can't. Has he planned to kill me? Banish me? Lock me?
'Your actions indicate otherwise... And so you leave me no choice. He got something out of his long, black robe. A small knife.
'Safety and peace may rest upon you Altair.'
That were the last words I heard. With the knife Al Mualim stabbed me right in my chest. An immense pain through my whole body. I tried to stay conscious, but when the guards dropped me on the ground I saw the world fade out.
Is this how I'm ending?
