Give your character an armour that they have to rely on throughout the whole story and then rip it off them and leave them vulnerable. The armour can be something physical (a bow and arrow) or non-physical (reliance on family).

Because you see when a warrior has their armour taken away are they still a warrior? Yes they are. They just have to learn how to fight without it. Your characters should be the same.
