Was it fair?

Was it fair, the way you died?
Were you forced, had they lied?
Or did you know what to do?
Your family, have they cried
Or did they pray and hope you’d survive

Was it fair, for them to say
‘Okay that’s it, today’s the day,’
Were you alone when you heard the gun?
Did the sky slowly turn grey,
As you heard a voice ‘Masks on and run!’

Was it fair for your loved ones
To receive a note ‘Sorry, he’s gone,’
Did you have a wife, a child maybe?
Did she have nightmares, hearing the guns?
Screaming your name, and waking your baby

Was it fair? Everyone knows it.
No it wasn’t. Respected young Brit
you brought pride to your country
You answered the call
You will be remembered
Private J. Ballingall.
