Why cryptozoölogy should be taken more seriously
I would like to start with a short story about my past. I was about 5 years old when my father told me to come outside to the garden. When I was outside, I saw a mountain of dung. “A dragon flew over and dropped something…”, my father said. I was so surprised, that I really believed him and started doing research about dragons. I became interested in all kind of mythological creatures and nowadays I still do researches.
A few years later after that specific day, my father told me this “dragon dung” was in reality eight wheelbarrows horse dung. I was really disappointed, but I never gave up my research.
Now I want to come to my point: the study of mythological creatures, cryptozoology, isn’t taken seriously. My father is a good example of that. All these years he kept saying things about mythological creatures, but he didn’t know anything about it. Maybe cryptozoology isn’t a real science, but it is still a sort of science. Let me give you two reasons why cryptozoology should be taken more seriously.
My first argument is that the mythological creatures exist. ‘Oh God’, you should think, but let me explain it to you. First, there is no proof they don’t exist, because you cannot prove the non-existence of a creature. Second, scientists didn’t believe the existence of the okapi or the platypus (vogelbekdier) before, but because they saw them, they believe in them. Does this mean hidden creatures don’t exist? I don’t think so. And because of this, there should be people who would search for them: the cryptozoologists. If cryptozoology didn’t exist, we would never know where or how these creatures live.
I want to take also another example: God. Billions of people believe in God, but is there proof he exists? No. Does that mean he doesn’t exist? No. So why should these creatures then not exist?
My second and last argument is that cryptozoology is also a real study. Why don’t people consider this study as a real part of science? It is because scientists don’t have enough evidence that these mythological creatures really exist. And searching something that doesn’t have enough evidence, isn’t a real science, according to scientists.
Let’s return to God. In universities there is a faculty named: “Religious sciences”. It’s the study about religion, so it is a study about God and all the other Bible figures. But like I said before: is there proof he and the other figures exist? No, so why is religious sciences a real science and cryptozoology a pseudoscience? I believe this isn’t fair. Cryptozoologists dedicated their entire life searching this creatures. They even died for what they believed.
If you’re still not convinced, let’s talk about the modern technology. Even now we find every day strange pictures of creatures we don’t recognize. Even now, with drones and security cameras, we still register strange phenomena we cannot explain. It’s easy to say it’s fake, but is it really fake?
My conclusion is that cryptozoology is a real science and should be taken more seriously. To closer you look for these creatures, the less you see.
Thank you
