Gryffindor values courage, bravery, loyalty, nerve and chivalry. Its mascot is the lion, and its colours are scarlet and gold. The Head of this house is the Transfiguration teacher, Minerva McGonagall, and the house ghost is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, more commonly known as Nearly Headless Nick. The founder of the house is Godric Gryffindor.

The Gryffindor common room is located in one of the castle's highest towers, the entrance to which is located on the seventh floor in the east wing of the castle and is guarded by a painting of The Fat Lady, who is garbed in a pink dress. She permits entry only after being given the correct password.

Griffoendors zijn moed, dapperheid, trouw, zenuw-en ridderlijkheid. De mascotte is de leeuw, en de kleuren zijn rood en goud. Het hoofd van dit huis is de Transfiguratie leraar, Minerva Anderling, en het huis spook is Sir Nicholas, beter bekend als Haast Onthoofde Henk. De oprichter van het huis is Goderic Griffoendor.

De Griffoendor leerlingenkamer is in een van de hoogste torens, de ingang die is op de zevende verdieping in de oostelijke vleugel van het kasteel en wordt bewaakt door een schilderij van de Dikke Dame, die is gekleed in een roze jurk. Zij geeft toegang pas na het geven van het juiste wachtwoord.

Slytherin (36 x uitgekomen)

Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, leadership, resourcefulness, and most of all, pure wizard blood. The house mascot of Slytherin is the serpent, and the house colours are green and silver. Salazar Slytherin founded the house. The Head of House is Severus Snape until near the end of the sixth book. Then, Horace Slughorn, the previous Head of House, comes out of retirement re-assuming authority. The ghost of Slytherin house is The Bloody Baron. The Slytherin dormitories and common room are reached through a bare stone wall in the dungeons. The Slytherin common room is a long, low, dungeon-style room, located under the Hogwarts Lake, furnished with green lamps and carved armchairs. The room is described in the second book as having a greenish glow.

Zwadderaars hebben ambitie, sluw, leiderschap, vindingrijkheid, en bovenal, pure tovenaar bloed. Het huis mascotte van Zwadderich is de slang, en het huis kleuren zijn groen en zilver. Salazar Zwadderich stichtte het huis.
Het hoofd van de House is Severus Sneep tot het einde van het zesde boek. Hildebrand Slakhoorn, het vorige hoofd van de Afdeling, komt uit pensionering opnieuw naar de Afdeling. Het spook van Zwadderich is The Bloederige Baron. De Zwadderich slaapzalen en een leerlingenkamer worden bereikt door middel van een kale stenen muur in de kerkers. De Zwadderich Leerlingeinkamer is een lange, lage, kerker-trant kamer, gelegen onder het Zweinstein Meer, ingericht met groene lampen en gesneden fauteuils. De kamer is beschreven in het tweede boek als zijnde een groene gloed.
