Chapter 2

“Dad are you alright?”
Hamish knew it was a stupid question to ask today, but it was the only one he could think of.
“I’m doing quite alright.” his dad’s voice trembled whilst saying that.
Hamish could see that his dad was lying and he felt sorry for him.
“You know Hamish, there is something that we should’ve told you long ago…”
There was another hesitation, Hamish waited patiently and he didn’t bother correcting his dad for using plural tense, Hamish knew that it was something his dad would keep doing for a long time, maybe forever.
“This is the second time that I’ve lost your father.”
Hamish didn’t quite understand what his dad was trying to say, but he was preparing for something really shocking.
“He faked his death, about six years before you were born…” Dad tried to explain, tears appeared in his eyes.
He felt his anger rise, though he didn't interrupt his father, he waited for an explanation, because father would’ve had a reason to do something so horrible to dad.
Hamish knew that father loved dad dearly, even though his father was afraid of love or any emotion in particular before he met his dad.
“Nothing to be angry about, he did it to save me, Lestrade and Mrs. Hudson.” Dad continued, like he could read my mind.
“How do you mean?” his voice sounded hoarse and his throat was dry, Hamish could see that it took a lot of effort from his dad to talk about this, but he desperately wanted to know.
“Your father was a consulting dedective, you know that.” Dad said, he simply nodded.
“Well, six years before you were born me and your father came in touch with Jim Moriarty, he was almost the same as your father. He was a mastermind, he was smart and he was not your ordinary type of guy, but he was on the other side. Your father was on the side of the angels, while Moriarty was a consulting criminal. Your father thought of Moriarty as a genius, and as a challenge…”
“But he was dangerous?” Hamish asked, it wasn’t a wild guess.
“Very, he knew everything about your father, thanks to your Uncle Mycroft...”
Dad's voice lowered when he spoke his uncle's name, even though he was a good uncle to Hamish, he now understood why his father and dad didn't get along quite well with him.
“And he made everyone believe that your father was a fraud. And one day he made your father choose between jumping from the St. Bart’s hospital or losing me, Lestrade and Mrs. Hudson…” Dad was sobbing now, and Hamish comforted him by placing his arm around his shoulders.
“But how?” Hamishe asked, he just couldn’t believe that his father had faked his dead instead of trying to save his loved ones in another way.
“If your father didn’t jump, we would all get shot by Moriarty’s men, so your father faked his death.”
“And how did he do that?” Hamish was speechless, but at the same time he had a lot of questions he wanted to ask.
“Well, he felt it coming, Moriarty had threatened him for a while then and he told Molly that he thought that he was going to die, so Molly arranged a body that looked a bit like your father. Same black curly hair and same sizes, she dressed him in the same clothes as your father was dressed in when I saw him jump and she placed the body in a pool of blood, on the pavement.
Your father was long gone by then, he fell on top of a vehicle and drove away.
He came back after three years.”
His dad stood up, wiping the tears from his face.
Hamish felt so sorry for him and he no longer wanted to bother him with his questions, but there was one more he really needed to ask.
“Weren’t you angry with him, when he came back?”
“Oh, I was furious…” his dad smiled a little, remembering the moment father came back.
“What did you do?”
“I yelled at him and I threatened that I would kill him with my bare hands.”
“What did father do?”
“Well, he went away and he never came back.” Dad said, in a desperate attempt to be funny.
“No, he went away and after a few days he sent me a letter, begging me if he was allowed to come over and explain everything to me. I agreed and after the night he came over, he never left again.”
