Harry POV.
The streets were covered in snow. It was one of the coldest days of the year. I cupped my hands and softly blew warm air across my frozen fingers. I was finally going to see Rose. It’d been months since I’d last visited her. A small smile played on my lips as I remembered the first time we’d met..
*
“Are you alright?” I asked softly, holding back laughter.
She stood up, blushing, and brushed the dirt off her jeans.
''The leaves are wet … I guess I slipped.”
“Well it certainly didn’t look like you did that on purpose,” I teased.
She giggled and held out her hand.
“My name is Rose.”
“Harry.”
''It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise,” I said.
And as I slid my rough hand into her tiny palm, I could tell that life as I knew it had changed.
*
Sighing, I noticed that everything was melting and turning to slush. As I trudged through the streets I noticed a few familiar faces. I kept my head down and pulled my hood further over my curls. I didn’t want anyone to recognize me. Today was hers.
*
“Harry! Don’t you dare!”
She squealed as I held her struggling body above the freezing cold ocean. We had been taking a nice walk along the beach when she skimmed her fingers through the waves and splashed me. I had quickly thrown her over my shoulder and was currently threatening to let her go for a nice little swim.
“Please!” she begged, hitting my back lightly with her fists.
I laughed and set her down on the edge of shore. She bit her lip as icy waves licked at her toes. I ran my finger across her cheek and she smiled. Leaning in, I gave her what would be our first kiss as boyfriend and girlfriend.
*
Cold wind whipped around me, filling my ears with a harsh whistling. A few more minutes and I would be there, with her, once again. I took a deep breath as another memory flooded my mind.
*
Her normally pale face was flushed with warmth as I spun her in a circle. My hand came to rest lightly on her waist as we continued to dance. She threw her head back in laughter and I couldn’t help but smile. Her eyes shone with delight as I pulled her closer to me for the last few lines of the song. My lips brushed her ear softly.
“I love you,” I whispered.
She leaned back and looked at me with wide eyes. I understood. I was shocked too. I hadn’t planned on saying it. The moment had felt right, and for once in my life, I truly meant it. She knew that… I could tell.
“I love you too,” she replied softly.
*
I remembered that moment like it was yesterday. It was the first time we’d spent the night together. Dancing, talking, laughing … that was all. Waking up next to her in the morning was the happiest moment of my life. It still is.
*
“Do you have to go?” I whined.
“Yes! I’ll be quick. Promise.”
She untangled herself from me and stood up. Brushing my curls to the side, she gently kissed my forehead. I inhaled her scent and lay there, enjoying it for as long as I could. By the time it had disappeared, so had she.
*
Finally, I was here. After all this time.
*
I was woken up by the phone ringing. Rose still wasn’t back. I picked it up, rubbing sleep from my eyes.
“Hello?”
“Is this Harry Styles?”
“Yes … who is this?”
“Cheshire General Hospital. There’s been an accident.”
They found me curled up in a ball on the floor. I don’t remember much of that night. I’ve been told that I was completely unresponsive. I don’t know what else they expected. I loved her, and just like that, she was gone forever.
*
I knelt down and reached into my coat pocket. I pulled out a fresh leaf, one that I had taken off of the tree in my flat. It was supposed to rain tomorrow and I knew that if I left it here, it would get very slick. Slick enough for someone to slip on. Someone who would get laughed at by a stranger. A stranger who would soon learn to love her. A love like neither of them could have ever dreamed. And hopefully, this time, it wouldn’t be lost.
I leaned forward and kissed the cool marble of her headstone.
“Happy Anniversary, my darling.”
