Year 1 Chap 1
Hannah and I walked down the stairs, following the elder students of the Hufflepuff House. Apparently, she knew some of the other girls in our House. Susan Bones, Leanne and Megan Jones. I smiled, though was a bit uncomfortable. Didn’t have any clue as to why.
We entered the kitchen corridor of Hogwarts. Just as I wondered why, the Prefect walked to a stack of barrels, and tapped the barrel two from the bottom, in the middle of the second row, in the rhythm of ‘Helga Hufflepuff’.
I wasn’t the only one who was shocked when a lid swung open, and a passageway revealed itself. One of the elder students tapped the barrels wrong, just to let us see what would happen, and the second she was finished, she got doused in vinegar. It was then that I figured I needed to study the rhythm of ‘Helga Hufflepuff’
We crawled through the passageway, and brushed off our robes when we got into the cozy common room of Hufflepuff.
I turned to Hannah and smiled. She smiled back, but turned away as the students began explaining things to us.
“It is round and earthy and low-ceilinged; it always feels sunny, and its circular windows have a view of rippling grass and dandelions. There is a lot of burnished copper about the place, and many plants, which either hang from the ceiling or sit on the windowsills. Our Head of House, Professor Pomona Sprout, is Head of Herbology, and she brings the most interesting specimens, some of which dance and talk, to decorate our room – one reason why Hufflepuffs are often very good at Herbology. Our overstuffed sofas and chairs are upholstered in yellow and black, and our dormitories are reached through the round doors in the walls of the common room. Copper lamps cast a warm light over our four-posters, all of which are covered in patchwork quilts, and copper bed warmers hang on the walls, should you have cold feet” The prefect spoke, I think his name was Gabriel?
I looked around the room, and wasn’t shocked at the amount of plants I was seeing. There were suits of armor standing against the walls as well, but were covered in flowers of the plants.
Normally suits of armor would be…I don’t know…aggressive looking. But the flowers made it look peaceful.
My attention shifted back to Gabriel when he said to split up and go to our separate dormitories. Girls and Boys.
I followed Hannah, and the other girls. I found myself grinning when I was told I’d share a room with Hannah, Leanne, Susan and Megan. I didn’t know any of the other girls, but I guessed I would in time.
As the others went and got to their own beds and trunks, I chose the bed in the corner. It looked like a gloomy little corner, compared to the rest of the room, but I didn’t mind.
I went to my trunk, and got the picture of my parents out of it. I sat down on my new bed and smiled sadly, as my finger traced the picture of my parents happily laughing at each other’s jokes.
They wanted to send me to Beauxbatons, where all the Veela kids were being sent, but I refused stubbornly. I didn’t want to be raised as a Veela who would use her power for the sake of popularity for example.
Hannah came up to me and sat beside me, peeking over my shoulder at the picture. “You look like them” She said. I grinned and thanked her, before putting the picture back on the nightstand.
“So, what are you exactly? Pureblood, Halfblood, Muggleborn? I haven’t heard of the family Blith before” She asked.
I winced inwardly. I didn’t want to intimidate people with my origin.
Despite that, Hannah was still my friend. So I told her.
“Actually, I’m a Veela” I said, glancing up to see her reaction.
Her eyes went wide and then she grinned widely. “So that’s why your hair is so silky looking and such a nice colour blond!”
I blinked and laughed. That was certainly not a reaction I expected. “Thanks, I guess. My mother says I inherited this colour from my great-great-grandmother from my Father’s side.”
Hannah went a little on about how she’d never met a Veela before, before some of the boys came and told us it was time for dinner.
“You guys go ahead. I’ll be down in a second” I said to them, and watched them leave.
I stood up, and went to the bathroom, looking into the mirror before opening the tap and running cold water. I leaned against the sink, looking at my reflection in the mirror before leaning down and splashing my face with water.
I went back and grabbed a comb from my trunk, brushing my hair real fast before pulling it back into a high ponytail, and leaving for the Great Hall.
