^The old demon^

Here's the next one, hope you enjoy it!

Youni sits down and starts her – at least I think she’s a girl- story. ‘Long ago, far too long for you to remember, or to be in any of your stories, everything lived together. Humans, Demons, Animals, and Plants. Sure, they lived separate lives, but there were friendships between the different groups. Demons would help Humans when they needed it, and the other way around. The same thing happened with Plants and Animals. But once, a Human killed an old Demon, who had walked into the Humans house by mistake, thinking it was his own. The Human came home from work and found the Demon there, drinking a cup of coffee. It ran towards its bedroom, and grabbed a gun. It shot the Demon clean through the head, reducing him to mere dust. Then the Demons family took revenge on the Human, and the Humans family took revenge on the Demons family, and so on. Since then, There has been a war between the Humans and Demons. The Demons have chosen the dark and shadows, while Humans chose the light. That doesn’t automatically mean the dark side is bad.’ Youni stops, and looks at me with her yellow eyes. I can only stare. Then I think of something she said, which I don’t get.
‘If it’s that long ago, why did they have coffee? I mean, everyone knows when coffee was invented, so it can’t be as long ago as you said. And does the fact that you mentioned Animals and Plants mean that they can talk? That would be cool…’
‘About the coffee, it was invented long before the year you know. I didn’t mention this just now, but the war between the Humans and Demons destroyed most of the world. That’s why they had to start building up their world again, and a lot of knowledge was lost. Since that moment the Demons have kept a low profile, but sometimes there is an attack. The Humans, having nearly forgotten about Demons, just blame the murders on one of their own. About the Plants and Animals, there a few who can still speak. Most have lost the use for it, so they have forgotten. ‘
‘So basically, it was the Humans fault, not the Demons? Actually, we are the bad guys?’
‘Yes, that’s how we Demons see it… And what the history would imply. But, that aside, I thought you were thirsty? There is a stream just behind that boulder, and the water is very clear and clean.’ Youni nods her head in the direction of the huge rock. I smile.
‘Thanks for helping me, but can I ask one question? Why did you help me? I’m just a lost Human…’
‘I don’t know, I guess I just felt like it.’ I can hear she’s lying, but I decide not to push it. I don’t really want to make a Demon angry. I thank her again and start walking in the direction of the stream.
