Carlisle looked at me for a few seconds and then held me up.
“Now how did you find out? Were you the one who told Elisabeth?” His voice was cold, almost unkind. It was very scary to hear Carlisle’s angelic voice like this.
I sobbed and told him. “I told no one. I didn’t know Elisabeth knew.”
“So how did you?”
“I just… Had a feeling. A strange one. I knew there was something going on. I put facts and fantasy together and… Well…” I blushed at him, the vampire, the one that could snap my neck if he wanted to this very instant. Carlisle relaxed and I gained some courage to talk again.
“Elisabeth knew? How do you know?”
He sighed. “Because she asked the exact same thing before she died. ‘You must do everything in your power. What others cannot do, that is what you must do for my Edward.’” He mimicked her voice with an eerie perfection. I gulped, thinking of the wonderful Elizabeth who was now deceased, swallowing some salty tears.
