Prologue, Solomons Temple
‘Wait, there must be another way,’ Malik said to me. ‘This one not needs die.’ He pointed to an old man inside the temple. I sneaked upon the man and assassinated him with my hidden blade.
‘An excellent kill. Fortune favours your blade,’ Kadar said to me.
‘Not fortune, skill,’ I said. ‘Watch a while longer and you may learn something.’ Malik turned his back to me and told Kadar: ‘Indeed. He'll teach you how to disregard everything the master's taught us.’
We walked further through the temple in silence.
‘And how would you have done it?’ I asked Malik.
He didn't say a thing. The coldness in my eyes weakened and I looked at his armory and weapons. We almost had the same armor. Assassins white with some red in it. The real protecting layer is underneath the cloth, incredible thin and light. We also carry the same weapons, except for the sword. We've got one hidden blade in the left sleeve, a sword, a dagger on our back and 20 throwing knifes divided over our body. I wanted to look at Kadar's armor, which is totally different, but Malik finally started talking.
‘I would not have drawn attention to us. I would not have taken the life of an innocent. What I would have done is follow the Creed.’ He said. He is far to obediently to the master and the creed, in my opinion.
‘Nothing is true. Everything is permitted. Understand these words. It matters not how we complete our task. Only that it's done,’ I said. I broke the creed, but it was for a higher goal, wasn’t it?
‘But this is not the way of—’
‘My way is better,’ I interrupted him.
Malik turned is back to me, he tried to have Kadar with him, but he was distracted by drawing on a wall.
‘I will scout ahead. Try not to dishonour us further.’ He shouted to me and then he was gone.
Kadar and I were talking about our mission. We walked on and finally we arrived in another, big room. ‘That must be the ark,’ Malik said, he seemed to have forgotten everything happened 5 minutes ago.
‘The... Ark... of the Covenant?’ Kadar slowly said, full of disbelief.
‘Don't be silly. There's no such thing. It's just a story.’
‘Then what is it?’ Kadar said, a bit too loud.
‘Quiet! Someone's coming!’ Malik jumped back and pushed Kadar out of the line of sight. I kept standing where I stood.
‘I want this through this gate by sunrise! The sooner we possess it, the sooner we can turn our attention to those jackals at Masyaf!’ A man shouted.
‘Robert de Sable, his life is mine,’ I said.
‘No! We would want to retrieve the treasure and deal with Robert only if necessary,’ Malik angrily said to me. I walked downstairs and halfway I said: ‘He stand between us and it, I would say it’s necessary.’
‘Discretion, Altair!’ He was furious now.
‘You mean cowardice. That man is our greatest enemy. And here we have a chance to be rid of him.’ I reacted. That angriness did nothing to me.
‘You have already broken two tenets of our Creed. Now you would break the third… Do not compromise the Brotherhood!’
‘I am your superior, in both title and ability. You should know better than to question me.’ I said and walked away.
I approached the Templars: ‘Hold Templars! You’re not the only ones with business here.’ A couple of metres from them away, I stopped. Malik and Kadar were right behind me now. Robert turned around and looked me right into the eyes.
‘Ah, this explains my missing man. And what is it what you want?’ Said his dark voice with a French accent.
‘Blood.’
Malik tried to stop me, but I pushed him back and ran towards Robert. My hidden blade almost pierced his throat, but he stopped me… We were wrestling, until he pushed me back. I felt on the beams which supported the entrance. They collapsed, so I couldn’t get back… ‘Kill the assassins!’ I heard Robert shouting. Then a fight… and shouts…
I got out of Solomon’s Temple, feeling guilty, but there was nothing I could do.
