Chapter One
Hatching was never going to be easy. The shell that surrounded me was thick, which was to protect me from the cold weather and stop me from coming out too early whilst on my fathers feet. But when I finally got out of the egg, not that much actually changed. I was still in warm darkness, but I could peep my head out now and chirp up at my father, who craned his head down. I was pretty hungry – hatching was very tiring work I'll have you know – so I chirped higher. He nuzzled my head a little with his beak, coughing up a milky substance that had been hidden in a crevice in the back of his throat just for me. Hungrily I gobbled it up, before retracting my head back into the soft downy darkness atop his feet. Soon, my mother should return with a full stomach for me, so my father could return to the ocean to feed himself. But for now, I was content.
