The Forest
We ate blueberries in the forest that day, me and Amy. Her slick blonde hair shimmering in the sun. It was a warm summer. I watched her dance to my songs by the lake, as the light shone through the leaves, leaving the forest looking like an underwater paradise. The birds hummed the same tunes. She was gracious, beautiful, wearing a white cotton dress with no sleeves. She walked over, and I stopped singing only for the birds to continue my song like they had heard it before. She looked at me with those beautiful eyes. The colour was a soft pink, but she had told me it was just green, so I just kept my mouth shut about it. I didn't really care if I was crazy when I was with her. She spoke to me with her soft voice.
'Any cherries left?' She asked
'Yes' I answered.
She sat down next to me. Her arms folded around her legs, pushing them towards her body. She started eating.
'You really like those, huh?'
'They are really sweet. And even though the outside is soft, they’re real tough on the inside. I wonder why I like them so much...'
'They’re kind of like you.'
She looked at her toes silently for a while.
'What makes you say that?'
'Just a thought. I like cherries.'
'Then do you like me, too?' she asked.
Another silence. She smiled and stood up.
‘We should go back,’ she said.
But we didn’t. We just stood there for a bit. Side by side, staring at the forest The light reflecting of the lake was making the bright green colour of the leaves almost luminous. I took her hand and squeezed it gently.
‘Let’s go then.’
I let go of her hand and turned around to walk back. She stood there looking for a while, and then caught up with me by running for a bit. We left the forest behind. I hated doing that. The forest was one of the few places where I could be completely comfortable. But I knew I’d get back to this place. I smiled at that thought. As I looked over to her, her mouth curled up into a cute smile.
